Laying Hen Feed Ration
Similar to the pig feed recipe we came up with, the feed we give to our laying hens is a custom mix. Sourced locally through the mill in town, this non-GMO feed yields the right amount of protein from varied sources, as well as trace minerals and other vitamins that help chickens thrive and produce some of the best eggs money can buy. In the winter months our layers are run in a more confinement scenario, by virtue of the lack of greenery and insect forage on the landscape. Also, maybe our layers are a bit snobby, but they certainly do not prefer to venture outside in the cold and snowy winter months we experience in the upper midwest. In the summer, however, these chickens have access to all the fresh green “salad bar” and whatever insects they can find. We currently house them in two adjacent paddocks but this summer we are going to rip all of that out and lean on Premier 1 netting and a rotational grazing style to evenly disperse their manure and ensure that one area does not get over utilized. This is what’s best for the land and what will allow us to bring the “chickenness” out of the chickens most readily. Below is a chart of the ration we feed our laying hens. It has evolved overtime to include the right blend of micro and macro nutrients and today, in conjunction with fresh forage, is what makes our family and our customers such big fans.
